Taurus HMR 17C/Can't eject spent casings
I finally got a chance to fire a few of my newer pieces this weekend.
One, however, gave me a bit of a problem, the Taurus 17C (.17HMR) revolver. Like this one over at Bud's: http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/p...ducts_id/32199 Fired the 8 rounds and then the spent casings wouldn't eject. I put a piece of leather over the ejector rod and with a few light taps with a small hammer was able to get them to eject. During this D/A firing I did have a problem with the cylinder action on one round and reverted to S/A for that one...seemed a little rough though like maybe a round had backed off and was binding. I thought that it was just new and needed loosening up so I reloaded with 8 more of the same Hornady .17 V-Max (17gr) ...same problem. Spent casings are still in revolver and setting on my desk as I re-read the instruction book to see if I can find something that would have caused this...nada. I have a few of these revolvers and a rifle AND the old striker. I've never experienced this problem before. Seems all spent casings are locked in there tighter than a camel's a** in a sand storm...just expanded and locked in. I bought this one through a dealer on Gunbrok**. Seems these are kinda hard to come by these days so I had to pay a little more than I wanted to. ...so, just wanted to get any thoughts on this. I'm not even sure how to get it back to Taurus for repair...or whatever. Appreciate any thoughts, suggestions |
Re: Taurus HMR 17C/Can't eject spent casings
Its new so there is obviously no buildup in the cylinders.

Alternatively the cylinders could be slightly oversize allowing expansion of the casings. link...... Whole of that thread: link...... |
Re: Taurus HMR 17C/Can't eject spent casings
I would suspect extremely rough chambers and or yoo much lube in the chambers...they need to be completely dry. Taurus QC has been very spotty the past few years, I know several people who have bought their guns that have had to return the multiple times for repair. My broter sent his Judge back 3 times for the same problem (it wouldn't go boom and would lock up the cylinder), he finally dumped it at a gun show.

Re: Taurus HMR 17C/Can't eject spent casings
Called Taurus this morning.
"Yeah, they do that sometimes...don't know why. Might be the ammo" Duh, BUT, YOU SEE, I DON'T WANT IT TO DO THAT SOMETIMES...OR ANYTIME ! (The thing's an HMR and I was using the exact ammo for which it was designed). "You can send it back in, but we're running about six weeks behind" I'm thinking (So, in a mad rush to make a buck, your QC has gone to hell in a hand-basket and your products ain't worth a tinker's dam) Oh Yeah, I dumped my Judge shortly after purchasing it, too. Just couldn't figure out what "I" needed it for. I'm sure it has it's place...but not at My Place...really over-hyped, IMHO That Albatross must have made them a fortune by now. Well, I think I'm through with Taurus.I'm sure they will be upset by that...LOL |
Re: Taurus HMR 17C/Can't eject spent casings
Knock them out and polish your chambers:adore:sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and do it yourself

OK, Hoot...
Sounds great! Uh, how do I do dat? |
Re: Taurus HMR 17C/Can't eject spent casings
2000 grit wet emery paper around a .22 brush should do the trick

I buzzed the hell out of the mop in-and-out made the chamber look like a mirror. I also polished the ramp the same way. I'd do this to your cylinders. If they are super rough....try the emery cloth first as mentioned above. |

Re: Taurus HMR 17C/Can't eject spent casings
I wonder if this is a case where the cartridge design just isn't ideal for the design of the gun? I say that because of my experience with some rimfire S&W's and Rugers.
For instance, I like the old K-22's. They are fine guns and useful as anything you can buy. I have one from 1947 that I carry around on the ranch all the time. Totally reliable. I also like .22 WMRF. One day I found a deal on an M48 in outstanding shape so I bought it. Despite its perfect condition, I have some issues with it that keep me from shooting it very much. The M48 is the .22 WMRF version of the K-22 (M17). Six shot DA revolver. If you load it up and fire one shot, you can reload the cylinder with no problem. But if you load up six and fire them all, it will be quite difficult to extract them all at once. If you fire six more, even tougher. I don't think I've ever even tried firing still another six without cleaning it. IMO, the higher pressure cartridge in that design creates a condition of hard extraction simply as the nature of the beast. I don't know if it is high pressure combined with long case and small diameter or what. But I did ask around on the S&W Forum and the answers were mostly of the "yeah, they do that" type. Since the 17 HMR is a necked down .22 WMRF, there may be nothing you can do. I had my gunsmith look at my M48 and he said a previous owner had already polished the chambers and he wouldn't recommend trying to go still further. He actually implied the polishing had somehow made it worse but I don't remember why.... So it might not just be because "it's a Taurus." On the other hand, I've had good luck with a Ruger SA using .22 WMRF and a Colt Frontier Scout in .22 WMRF. But then you push out each case one at a time with the ejector rod. Makes me think the SA design is just better for that cartridge in a revolver. Gregg |
